An Gorta Mór - 17 May 2026

Join Aotearoa Irish for Justice and Peace, Sunday 17th May, for Lá Cuimhneacháin Náisiúnta an Ghorta Mhóir | National Famine Commemoration Day, Hanging Ditch in Leeds St, Wgtn CBD, from 3 pm on.

Come share stories, songs and reflect. We'll also consider issues of food insecurity today. Haimana Hirini will make connections to Aotearoa, and Adham will speak about starvation in Gaza. From 4 pm, Irish musicians will play around the tables.

Hanging Ditch will be making and selling Irish Stew toasties for the occasion.

No other event in Irish history can be likened to the Great Famine, either for its immediate, tragic impact, or its legacy of emigration, cultural loss and decline of the Irish language. The population of Ireland, which was close to 8.5 million in 1845, fell to 6.6 million by 1851, and the effects caused intergenerational pain and trauma.' www.irishfamine.ie
